What the tool is

By asking how something happened, then drilling deeper each time with another ‘how?’, you can quickly get to the root causes of a problem, regardless of the complexity of the circumstances. By asking how something could happen, you can start to generate new ways of working.

There are many benefits to this simple but powerful technique:

  • It allows those participating to follow several parallel streams of thought, using each question and answer to stimulate further questions and answers.
  • It allows participants not to follow certain streams of thought – in discussion-based problem solving they would be forced to move in the same direction as everyone else.
