What counts is what works. Small businesses come in all shapes and sizes. Some are good and some are not. Some make a lot of money and some do not. Some foster happy, productive, meaningful workplaces and others do not. What is it that separates them? In these last two chapters, the distinguishing characteristics of the best small businesses are explored.

Swimming with the Big Fish

It is easy to fall into a rut, especially when it is a comfortable rut. If your business earns a nice profit and it is a good place to work, everyone might easily settle into a routine in which growth is less important than maintaining the status quo. You know what you know, and what you know works. Why upset the apple cart?

But if you want to take your business to the next level, to make more, do more, and have more fun, then you will you need to (1) break the routine and (2) begin to associate with people who can help you to get where you want to go. Tried and true is nice if that is what you want, but the best small businesses strive to become even better.
