Plans for short runs require a great deal of up-front attention. The objective is to create a list of as many potential sources of variation as possible and to take action to deal with them before going into production. One of the first steps to be taken is to identify which processes may be used to produce a given part; this is called the "Approved Process List." Analogously, parts that can be produced by a given process should also be identified; this is called the "Approved Parts List."
