17.2. POWER AND SAMPLE SIZE

In designed experiments, the term power of the test refers to the probability that the F test will lead to accepting the alternative hypothesis when in fact the alternative hypothesis holds, i.e., 1-β. To determine power probabilities we use the non-central F distribution. Charts have been prepared to simplify this task (see Appendix Table 14). The tables are indexed by values of Φ. When all sample sizes are of equal size n, Φ is computed using Equation 17.1.
