THE ANATOMY OF “SHOOTING FOR THE CUT”

So let me try to break down what shooting for the cut actually looks like in a finished sequence. On the next page is a line-by-line illustration of an edited live performance sequence that was shot with a single camera. To pull this off requires great documentary camera skills— essentially getting as much usable real-time footage of a live event as it unfolds while simultaneously changing camera angles and techniques. The goal is to make the finished product a visually dynamic representation of the live event…with the understanding and application of some standard editing trickery.
