The first thing I do is scout to see how big the club is and whether they have their own house sound system. I always try to catch whoever the engineer is and speak with them beforehand. For instance, we are going to record a live set at a venue next week. Thankfully, they have an in-house system. They’ve got an engineer who is going to be taking all of the different mic inputs and making a nice mix for P.A.s. All I am going to do is take a “feed” off that mix, which is an easy gig. Otherwise, you set the mics up yourself, or you record the room sound. There are different ways you can do it.
