The Performance vs. The Video

The needs of video and the needs of putting on a good live performance can often be at odds. Some examples: ample light vs. moody dark, camera position vs. audience experience, a clean stage vs. cameras onstage, etc. Bands and musicians often end up effectively sabotaging the quality of their own live performance video by refusing to compromise on things like lighting design or camera position. “Yes, I know you always do that song with all-red lighting onstage and then the two-minute drum solo in complete darkness, but it’s going to play like crap on the finished video.”
