Accidental Architecture—Describes those integrated systems that have organically grown to respond to a series of business needs without regards to an overall architectural model or pattern. In many cases, an enterprise will intend to use a specific integration architectural model, but time or monetary constraints will force an accidental architecture.

Adapter—In SOA, an adapter is a component that translates from one middleware standard to another. Software that turns SOAP messages into SQL calls for access to a database would be one such example. The term adapter may also denote the wrapper around the service.
