Chapter 5. Competency Dependence: The Curse of Incumbency

Most companies depend on a core competency for success, but your “competency dependence” becomes a self-destructive habit when it limits your vision and blinds you to other opportunities. The competency-dependent company is like Mao Zedong’s frog at the bottom of the well. He thinks the sky is only as big as the top of the well. If he surfaced, he would have an entirely different view.

What do you do when your core competency has become obsolete or noncompetitive? What do you do when somebody else (like an offshore company) is doing a better job, and all your customers are deserting you? If you can’t figure out what to do, if you feel trapped, you have become competency-dependent.
