Chapter 7

Happiness

imageThe next morning Josh sat on the couch enjoying his magazine. He felt refreshed after a great night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast. His parents were taking a walk, and he and Dharma had the house to themselves. Josh was prone to read all sorts of magazines and newspapers, having discovered that the articles often led to random insights and creative ideas for his work. One time he’d read an article about a small business called Taco Truck out of New Jersey that was using social media to connect with its customers. This inspired Josh to spearhead an initiative to help his company communicate better both internally and externally. He never knew where his next idea would come from, and it was one of the aspects about his job that still excited him.

As he turned the pages, Dharma unexpectedly hopped up from where she was lying and pressed her nose in the magazine. At first, Josh thought she was trying to get into his lap, but then realized she was moving the pages with her nose. After turning the pages to the middle of the magazine, she resumed her place by Josh’s feet and rested her head on his shoes. Yes, dogs know more than humans think. When Josh looked at down at the magazine, he noticed it was an article about happiness and how all sorts of companies were using happiness in their marketing messages. “Okay, girl, if you want me to read this I will,” he said, ...
