Before the internet, bricks‐and‐mortar businesses stored all of their contacts in a company Rolodex, which was a desktop card index used to record names, addresses, and telephone numbers, in the form of a rotating spindle or a small tray to which removable cards were attached.

A company's Rolodex was its lifeblood and each employee's most valuable asset. If you had a robust enough Rolodex, no one would fire you. Even if you were fired, you'd be back on your feet in no time because of all your clients and connections. Today, the same is true of your email subscription list.
