“You can’t change horses in midstream”

This expression is mad. Of course you can change horses in midstream. Every case is different, but often it’s the most sensible option. Lots of traditional rules contradict each other, and this one contradicts the principle that ‘if you know you’re in a hole, stop digging’, which I find much more helpful.

If you’re midstream on a horse that is clearly not going to make it to the other side, why wouldn’t you change? When your life, or any part of it, is heading for disaster – or even just heading somewhere you don’t want to go – my advice is to change direction as soon as possible. There’s always some way you can get things back on track.
