Teach them to fail successfully

No one likes to fail, but for kids it can sometimes seem even worse than it does from where we’re standing. It’s a sad fact that some kids even commit suicide due to the fear of failing exams, when we grown-ups know that failing exams just isn’t that dreadful. Inevitably your child will fail at something sooner or later. Maybe they’re brilliant at exams but they may fail their driving test, or not get into the football team, or be told they can’t join their mates’ band because they can’t sing in tune (I’ve been there).

Now, as I say, you might be able to see that it’s not the end of the world. But the reason this Rule is in the ‘crisis’ section is because, to your child, it may well be a crisis. And if ...
