Recognize that squabbling is healthy (within reason)

If you have more than one child – and unless you started with twins you can’t say you didn’t know better – you’ll be no stranger to the sound of squabbling. Some do it more than others, but they all do it. And half the frustration is that it’s usually just so pointless. Or is it?

Does it really matter who that computer game actually belongs to? Or who’s got the coolest shoes? Or who goes out through the front door first (yes, mine have actually squabbled ferociously about this)? Well, the short answer obviously is no. Not to you anyway.

But it does matter that our children learn how to squabble. Why? Because until they know how to squabble properly, they can’t learn how not to squabble. ...
