By the mid-1990s, Andre Agassi had reached the highest levels of society’s standards of achievement. He had fame, money, power, and trophies galore. But the more he “succeeded,” the more miserable he became: he was unhappy and unfulfilled, and while he wouldn’t admit it to anyone, he hated tennis. From a young age, his father had pushed him so hard that the game of tennis devolved into his prison. The more he excelled, the more he lost in the rest of his life. Although he made the grade by all external standards, he was deeply depressed; his unparalleled career success didn’t equate to happiness.
