9.1 What Is It All for?

People who work on technology mostly do so because it’s interesting, but to get someone to pay the bills, the technology must also satisfy a real need. To be practical, an RFID system has to identify something that’s worth keeping track of, and for which wireless means are superior to other labeling approaches.

When we look at potential RFID applications, we need to not only think about whether it makes sense to use RFID – instead of a bar code, a conventional printed name, or a couple of marks with a hammer – but also what kind of RFID technology to use.
