Afterword

Every book faces the limits of the ability of the author and the patience of the reader. This book has focused almost exclusively on physical-layer operation of tags and readers using radiative coupling. We have only touched on the variety of inductively-coupled RFID technologies and protocols that are more appropriate for many important applications. We have left for others to illuminate the vital topic of how the voluminous data collected by a network of readers is converted into useful knowledge for the enterprise they serve. We have left unexamined, save by citation, the important social issues surrounding the effect of radio frequency identification on privacy, and personal security as well as the security of corporate data.
