Progress in Computer Vision
BEGINNING AROUND 1970 COMPUTER VISION RESEARCH GREW INTO A HIGHLY developed subspecialty of AI, joining other specialized areas such as natural language processing, robotics, knowledge representation, and reasoning (to name just a few of them). In this chapter, I’ll describe some of the important advances in computer vision during this period. Some of these were made in pursuit of specific applications in several fields such as aerial reconnaissance, cartography, robotics, medicine, document analysis, and surveillance.1
