Evaluation

Introduction

The literature on coaching tends to illustrate different techniques or psychological approaches. There is a need for an evidence-based evaluation of the effectiveness of coaching. This chapter advocates the impact of assessment as a methodology used in the evaluation of the effectiveness of a coaching programme. The key question is: How will you realize the benefits? The chapter provides a detailed evaluation of the theories, tools and techniques of coaching. It also provides an evaluation framework, its implementation process, and the results in terms of the outcome and impact.

The generic evaluation methodology described in the first section can be used to assist evaluators and managers in the development of plans for evaluating and monitoring coaching and mentoring programmes. It sets out the core elements that should be covered in an evaluation plan. From an organizational perspective, an evaluation plan can be established before the implementation of a coaching and mentoring programme.

Evaluation is an important part of the business process; it is designed to improve the success of coaching and mentoring programmes in achieving organizational objectives, to assist resource allocation and to provide accountability.
