Chapter 11. Knowing when to say ‘no’

HAVING SPENT THE PREVIOUS TEN CHAPTERS outlining some hints, tips, lessons and general advice on how to get into the master class of project management it may seem odd to be approaching the end of the book with a chapter on when you should avoid a project altogether. But some things are just not meant to happen. No matter how well the work is planned, how well structured the team is, or how inspirational the sponsor some projects are just never going to come to a successful conclusion. As a project manager these are the times to keep your head low and avoid the work, or speak up firmly against it – for project management is about ensuring delivery, not about pointless heroics against unassailable odds.
