Identify the Situation and Probable Causes

When project status collection or other communication reveals that an individual goal has been missed or is in jeopardy, identify the problem and outline the consequences to the project (in schedule slippage, budget overrun, or other adverse results). Consider possible root causes for the situation, which may include:

  • Delegating of responsibility and ownership is unclear.

  • The individual lacks knowledge, skill, or aptitude for the work.

  • The individual has more work to do than can be accomplished.

  • There are insufficient resources to complete the work.

  • The work is dependent on an input that is late.

  • Information distribution regarding the work is inadequate.

  • The individual is from another organization, where ...
