Why Matrix Teams?

Most organizations are organized functionally, and managers are responsible for workers with similar job descriptions—marketing managers manage the marketing staff, and research and development managers are in charge of engineers. In these companies, complex projects rely on teams drawn from several functions.

Members of matrix project teams (also called crossfunctional or multi-disciplinary teams) have more than one manager—their functional manager, plus the person responsible for leading the project. When the project manager has greater authority, the matrix is called strong; when functional managers have more power (the more typical case), it is a weak matrix.
