What is this about and why is it important?

Project management’s core concern is the creation and implementation of deliverables. But organisations do not make an investment in projects for the sake of deliverables. Project investments are made to enhance the organisation by enabling benefits to be realised.

Projects enable benefits, but usually they do not directly realise them. Projects create deliverables: new IT systems, processes, buildings and facilities, new products and so on. It is the exploitation of the deliverables which creates benefits. Occasionally, benefits arise during the life of the project, but normally they occur afterwards.
