Fitting the Project Office Into the Organization

Where does the project office belong in the organization? That really depends upon its scope—upon the spread of projects for which it will be responsible. Ideally, the project office is the responsibility of a senior executive, but initially its position within your organization will depend upon your level and the level of support that you can generate from your managers. For example, if you are the manager of application development reporting to a CIO, and if your boss does not see a project office as a priority, your scope of action is limited to your department. Your project office will report to you with responsibility solely for those projects that fall within your purview.
