There are a variety of techniques to compile statistics on economic growth and levels of poverty in less and least developed countries. The difficulty in compiling these statistics is compounded by the large number of individuals in these countries engaging in the informal economy and/or subsistence agriculture. Furthermore, much of the data used to compile these statistics often come from governments which may or may not have motivations to report accurately. Therefore, different agencies often report slightly different numbers and as a consequence one will encounter some inconsistencies in the statistics reported in this book.
