Chapter 10

Saying and Not Saying; Listening and Not Listening

How do high-performance groups sound?

Members of high-performance groups are fearless when it comes to speaking their truths and they are eager to hear each other's truths. Indeed, their frankness can be unnerving to those who have not been indoctrinated.

People in high-performance groups are active listeners and distinguish facts from stories from beliefs in real time. They understand the importance of sharing their own beliefs and knowing those of others.

Finally, high-performance groups do not tolerate any form of gossip. They understand gossip's destructive nature, know how to recognize it, and have tools to stop it when it shows up.

The time it will take you to read this chapter will be long enough to master the three PRIMES it contains. There is no learning curve for these PRIMES; they provide value to the entire group, even if you are the only member of the group that applies them. Your unilateral application of these PRIMES the very next time you interact with the group will drive higher group performance.
