E.5 Conclusion

This case study presents the design process for the creation of a wireless solar-powered mouse (SPM). Fifteen SPM prototypes have been assembled, based on the concept evaluation presented in this case study. Preliminary results from prototype testing indicate the product concept to be feasible, from both technical and user perspectives. To guarantee autonomous, solar-powered operation of the SPM for medium or heavy device use also, sunbathing of the SPM is required. The conducted user tests suggest that users are willing to “sunbathe” their SPM (at least on a weekly basis, i.e., during the weekend). Future research should also lead to the development of simulation tools that model irradiance reaching a PV unit within complex product geometries. This would facilitate the design of product encasings with better light-harvesting properties, with the goal to eventually reduce sunbathing requirements during daily PV-powered product use.
