The first coffeehouse in England was established in Oxford in 1650, and it turned out to be a good business—by 1675, there were more than 3,000 of them in England alone. At the same time, they were catching on all over Europe.

Coffeehouses drastically altered the public drinking habits of the day, turning their patrons away from their traditional reliance on beer, wine, and booze. The substitution of a stimulant for these depressive drinks awakened customers to serious discussion and debate, and that, in turn, inspired sweeping new ideas about everything from religion to politics.
