I have been intrigued by the social and technical aspects of organizations and work for more than twenty years. In the world of academics we call this area “sociotechnical systems” and think about how organizations can be designed to jointly optimize the human and the technical.1 Yet when was the last time you heard a manager talk about using sociotechnical ideas to design a change? I’ve been driven to find a way to make these important ideas more palatable outside the halls of universities.
