Research shows there to be a strong neurological connection between pleasure, movement, and learning. “At a basic level, it makes sense. Play, sex, dance, music, games, eating, talking, and many other pleasures all involve physical movement” (Zull, 2002). Martial arts teachers know that keeping students moving is the best way to motivate them to learn. They also know that the most effective way a student can learn is to listen to verbal instructions, watch a move being demonstrated, and repeatedly practice the move until it is transformed from the brain’s short-term memory to what they refer to as muscle memory, or what brain scientists call procedural memory.
