Introduction

The iPad probably won’t fully replace laptops and desktops anytime soon, but this mobile device has become almost as ubiquitous as a smartphone, particularly among photographers. Screen resolution is gorgeous, especially with the Retina display, and the touchscreen is fluid, highly intuitive and, frankly, fun.

More importantly, mobile apps, particularly for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod, have become increasingly sophisticated, so we can easily slip an iPad into a bag and leave the laptop at home without a major loss in productivity. While current apps don’t have the breadth and depth of features of Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, they offer many of the same important functions, including layer masks and layers.
