PRACTICAL COMPOSITE

Sometimes compositing is needed for very basic, practical reasons rather than to try and be clever. Objects may be in different locations (see Frame Break, pages 1819), or different sizes, or just too unwieldy to haul into position. This was the case here, in the hidden warehouse of Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), the special effects facility set up by George Lucas to create Star Wars, and which went on to become the leader in the field. Here was a rare opportunity: to show famous props all together, from Star Wars to Indiana Jones, and it took an entire day assembling them all in such a way that the frame is packed fully with objects. But the planet at top left (Tatooine) is painted on glass, and the Death Star top right ...
