Searching for Patterns: Imagination and Reality
If we can distinguish patterns within the depths of complexity, we may be able to use them as paths to guide us through the maze. There are two basic ways to do it: we can use our imaginations, or we can use statistics.

Imagination

In a famous episode of Peanuts, Lucy van Pelt, Charlie Brown, and Linus van Pelt use their imaginations to see patterns in clouds:
Lucy: Aren’t the clouds beautiful? They look like big balls of cotton. I could just lie here all day and watch them drift by. If you use your imagination, you can see lots of things in the cloud’s formations. What do you think you see, Linus?
