5.4. The Process Manager

The process manager is the "keeper" of the NPD process. In this role, the process keeper must be process expert, unabashed promoter, and tireless improver. The process manager becomes the recognized expert at all aspects of the NPD process. He or she must understand the NPD process, company capabilities, portfolio, pipeline, and projects. Process managers may be considered the "conscious of the process."

The emphasis on "process" suggests recruiting someone with a background in engineering, science, or the total quality management movement (TQM). Strong process managers are often those who have experience in developing company products, and therefore, know the pitfalls and can envision best practices.

Because the position of process manager is a new one in most organizations, the temptation exists to simply add this role to an existing position. This is almost always a deadly mistake. Someone should be appointed process manager as his or her primary responsibility. Except in very small NPD organizations, this should be a full-time responsibility during the implementation of a new NPD process. Secondarily, special projects can be added after the new process is substantially underway.
