5.13. Summary

The successful NPD process is "owned" by all who participate in it. Three central leadership roles must be clearly identified: The process champion owns the initiation of the new process; the process sponsor lines up the necessary resources and owns the smooth operation of the process; and the process manager owns the implementation and improvement of the process. Other roles emerge, depending on the NPD process model adopted. Inevitably, many participants have more than one role in the process. They must be clear about which "hat" they are wearing at any particular time.

To conclude, the overarching mantra for process ownership can be simply stated: the NPD process owned by its practitioners endures.
