Part VI: PDMA RESEARCH ON NPD

No great thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig. If you tell me that you desire a fig, I answer that there must be time. Let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen.

—EPICTETUS, ROMAN PHILOSOPHER, 106 AD

Sixteen years ago the PDMA planted two new product development research programs. These programs blossomed into what today are the Outstanding Corporate Innovator (OCI) award and the Comparative Performance Assessment Study (CPAS).

Since 1988, the OCI committee has selected over 29 firms as OCI award winners. Summarized in Chapter 35 are the lessons learned from these firms, which must meet the following four OCI standards:

  1. A continued record of success in launching new products over a five-year period.

  2. Significant company growth delivered by its successful new products.

  3. A sound new product development process in place.

  4. Unique and innovative features of their approach to product development that make it suitable for that firm.

The Comparative Performance Assessment Study began its existence as a best practices study first completed in 1990 and then repeated in 1995. The results of the two studies provided the basis for over a 100 briefings at conferences worldwide. The best practice research was moved to the PDMA Foundation in 2003 and repositioned as a comparative performance study. Chapter 36 reports on the analysis of first results from the 2003 CPAS.
