34.2. Ownership of the Obsolescence Process

As overall managers of a product family, product managers own the analysis and decision of whether to discontinue a product line. Armed with knowledge about the product, the market, and the annual contribution to revenue, the product manager is in a unique position to bring the facts concerning a product line to the organization, to propose the obsolescence of a product family, and to manage the obsolescence event. The product manager will evaluate a number of factors to determine which products are candidates for obsolescence.
