5.9. Gatekeepers

Gatekeepers are usually drawn from the ranks of functional managers and have strong knowledge of the various complexities involved in getting new products into the marketplace. They serve as referees of deliverables from project teams, and often make critical gate decisions.

NOTE

The gatekeepers own key decisions at project gates.

When the gatekeepers approve moving a project on to the next development stage, the process sponsor and resource managers respond by finding and assigning the needed people and physical resources. These leaders co-own the often vexing problem of making the project's needs fit in the current pipeline.

Gatekeepers are also commonly expected to act as coaches to project teams.
