Within an amazingly short amount of time, the bulk of our personal media has gone digital. Although plenty of people still shoot film and buy albums on vinyl, I would guess that most of us now capture images with digital cameras and buy music online or on CDs (which are then converted to digital files).

Apple has long been a champion of digital media—the iTunes Store is arguably saving the music business—so it’s no surprise that OS X handles these media requirements. A large reason for that is QuickTime X, the core technology that handles video and audio in OS X.
