If you are new to using technology for learning, some terms in this book may be unfamiliar to you. This glossary will help you make sense of some of the most commonly used terms. In addition (in the realm of “shameless plug”), my first book, Making Sense of Online Learning, written with Amy Sitze, should be very helpful to people new to this field as well because it was written just for you.

Term Definition
asynchronous As it relates to online learning, events that are not time-coordinated. People use the materials (and possibly communicate with each other) at different times. Examples include email, threaded discussion, most higher education online courses, and self-paced online courses.
