4.15. A Jumble of Nuts and Bolts

When I think of how software is produced today, in many cases it is as if there were assembly lines that produce bolts and nuts and washers and girders. To build anything useful, you need to assemble all these things together. But the manufacturing processes are haphazard and standards are few. So every nut and bolt that comes off the assembly line is a different size—and the only way to tell if a nut fits on a bolt is by trial and error!

The only reasonable way to fix this problem is to overhaul the assembly line so that you know exactly what size nut or bolt you are making and that it will be properly manufactured.
