We did not so much write this book as discover it. To a large degree, it is the product of all the transitions that have influenced all the people who have ever influenced us. Throughout our careers, we have learned by doing, by watching, and by interacting with a whole range of bosses, coaches, peers, subordinates, partners, and clients. We end every PrimeGenesis[1] interaction with two questions: What was particularly valuable? What are your suggestions for improvement? It is amazing what you can learn by asking.

What you have in your hands was born of continuing to ask those questions. Since we wrote the first edition, we have learned that the book and the methodology are even more valuable than we had thought. Our clients and readers tell us how ideas in the book have made a difference to them at different times. We have also learned that we could make the book even more valuable by incorporating some changes. We have added chapters on positioning yourself, getting promoted from within, and further developing leadership skills after the first 100 days. We have also sharpened our tools and stories and increased the emphasis on communication. In some ways, your first 100 days are all about communication.

We would need a whole separate book to acknowledge the people who have had the most positive influence on us over the years. But we must acknowledge the contributions of our partners in PrimeGenesis up front: Bill Berman, Ed Bancroft, George Olcott, Harry Kangis, ...
