On my first visit to Colombia in 2009, I sat with an old Latin America hand at an outdoor cafe in Bogotá, the country's stylish capital, contentedly watching the world go by. "Ten years ago, we couldn't have done this," my companion told me. Once best known for drug-based violence, Colombia is now far safer and has emerged as one of the most fascinating countries in Latin America. While problems of violence remain, Colombia has made huge progress in overcoming them, and we at the Financial Times have been following the process closely.
