Remote GUI Control

With the increase in the prevalence and importance of GUI methods of using a computer, it is important that remote login procedures enable GUI access. Two methods are in common use to allow such access:

  • The X Window System (or X for short) was designed from the ground up as a networked GUI. This fact means you can use X programs remotely with very little additional effort—provided you have appropriate software on two computers.

  • The Virtual Network Computing (VNC) program provides an alternative to X that works across more platforms than does X. It works in a substantially different way than does X, but the user experience can be similar.
