Document Exchange: PDF Readers

A handful of file formats are popular for exchanging text and other types of files:

  • Plain text— Raw ASCII text is the most universal file format for text in the Roman alphabet. The features of all more advanced formats might seem good, and sometimes they're necessary, but often they're superfluous or can cause more problems than they're worth.

  • Word processor formats— Microsoft Word is a particularly popular document-exchange format, but it is less than ideal from a multi-OS perspective. If you and the person with whom you are exchanging a document share a specific word processor, you can use that program's format with impunity.
