Utility programs are quite useful in turning a so-so computing environment into a very good computing environment. By enabling you to search for files, edit files, develop programs, transport files, and so on, utilities help to fill in the gaps left by major application programs. In many cases, utilities are necessarily single platform—it makes no sense to run an OS/2 WPS maintenance utility on Windows, for example.
