Non-GNU Open Source Tools

The FSF doesn't control open source development, although it has contributed many of the most basic tools for cross-platform programming and technical computer use. In this section I highlight a couple of the more useful cross-platform non-GNU open source tools.

The XFree86 GUI Environment

XFree86 (http://www.xfree86.org) is an implementation of the X Window System (X for short) for x86 computers. X is a windowing environment that is common on UNIX systems and less common on other platforms.
