Summary

Most applications produce data files, and these files take different formats depending on the application's type, details of the features supported by the program, and the design decisions made by the application's programmers. Some data types are widely supported in most or all OSs, whereas others have limited or no cross-platform support. As a user of a multi-OS computer, you should give serious consideration to the portability of the data file formats for your major applications. Even if you intend to do most of your work in one OS, portability to other OSs might be important if you need to exchange your files with co-workers or if there is a chance you might change your primary OS in the future.
