Foreign NTFS and NTFS 5.0 Support

Foreign support for NTFS is available for a variety of OSs and in many forms, but NTFS support is still not as widespread as is support for FAT. Nonetheless, NTFS is a viable file-sharing option for some OS combinations, particularly if you don't need write access to NTFS from OSs other than Windows NT.

Windows 2000 includes changes to NTFS (known as NTFS 5.0) that necessitate alterations to the on-disk storage format of NTFS. Older versions of Windows NT cannot use the modified NTFS without updated drivers. (You must apply Service Pack 4 or above to Windows NT 4.0 to obtain this support.)
