Linux's ext2fs

Linux has gone through a string of native filesystems, starting with the Minix filesystem it borrowed from the older Minix UNIX clone OS, and then moving on to the Extended Filesystem (extfs) and the Xia Filesystem (xiafs), and finally settling on the Second Extended Filesystem (ext2fs). The internal design of ext2fs is heavily influenced by that of the UNIX FFS and resembles OS/2's HPFS. Like these filesystems, ext2fs uses a free block bitmap to indicate what space is free, and inodes to provide useful file information.
